Can’t wait for iOS 4.1? Get it Early!

ios41

Steve Jobs made his usual September conference about iPods and the state of the Apple Universe last week in a keynote that not only showed off the new Apple TV, a new line of iPods but also the next version of the iOS software. iOS 4.1 is scheduled for release sometime next week however over at uneasysilence, they’ve found out that you don’t need to be a developer to try out the new 4.1 iOS (which you usually have to be) and they’ve stuck links up online for where you can get the new version without having to wait till next week. Word of warning, I haven’t tested these out myself so do so at your own risk but as far as I can tell, it’s all perfectly legit.

Rage Demo looks incredible on the iPhone

QuakeCon_Carmack

QuakeCon, like it’s larger and more popular counterpart E3, is a gaming convention held every year in Dallas Texas and this year it brought a special treat. That came from John Carmack, the co-founder of id Software and the lead programmer to familar gaming titles Quake and Wolfenstein. So what did he have to announce? Probably the most awesome game demo on the iOS platform.

rage

The screenshot above. Where does that look it came from? Something resembling the original Xbox or PS2? Well that’s where you’d be wrong. This screenshot was actually taken off the demo device that John Carmack demonstrated at QuakeCon this year. I’m sure you’ll agree, it’s quite a stunning achievement on such a small device. Below is a full demo

An awesome demonstration of the capabilities this technology can hold. I’ll let John Carmack have the last word of the post:

As you look towards the industry in future years, there's the idea that you could pull the machine out of your pocket that could kill anything on a previous generation console, like an Xbox or PlayStation 2, on the hardware.

It's not as powerful as the current generation, but it's not all that far off.

JailbreakMe.com Jailbreaks your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Directly from Safari

photo

A lot of you with have seen an old post on how to jailbreak the new iOS4 on this site however it seems like as if the Dev-Team has done it again and released a simple jailbreak right from your device. Created by comex, this jailbreak actually works entirely from your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad without needing to download any pesky ispw’s or any other third party tool such as Blackra1n, YellowSn0w, L1onT1gerWaterCrestP1nkYell0w0range 3.2.1.4.5.2 jailbreak!

It’s very simple, you just go to the JailbreakMe site directly from your iPod Touch or iPhone, follow the single instruction that says “Slide to Jailbreak” and let it do it’s business. By the way, if you try to access the site from a desktop or non iPhone or iPod Touch, it’ll just redirect you to their FAQ section. The site works due to a loophole in the way these devices handles Adobe .pdf files which is a slightly bit ironic if you’ve been following the Apple vs Adobe Flash war in the last few months.

Now I’ve only tested this on my iPhone 3GS running iOS4 with the new Bootrom but it works! The first time I tried it, it cut off due to my Edge signal dropping off, but at the second time of asking it jail broke my phone in a whoppingly fast 4 and a half minutes. So go ahead and give it a go but check out the Dev-Team’s site just in case of any warnings or issues that crop up. Of course, jailbreak at your own risk and I do not accept any responsibility for anything that might go wrong.

Jailbreakme.com

Also in case the site is down due to excess traffic, the awesome guys at Modmyi have set up a mirror site at:

EDIT: There are currently early reports indicating that iPhone 4 iOS4.0 users may lose the facetime and MMS features on their phone. So far no other issues to report, my 3GS is working like a gem. Oh SbSettings how much I’ve missed you …

EDIT 2: Just a few hours after the problem was discovered, the guy’s over at Jailbreakme have managed to fix the two issues so you shouldn’t have any more problems. So go ahead and jailbreak, so far there haven't been any more reports of issues with the site

Augmented Reality app coming soon to an iPhone 3GS near you

dscf5221 With the release of the new iPhone 3GS, Apple has included a digital compass into the hardware. Alright, but that’s nothing groundbreaking right? The G1 can do it and so do a lot of bog standard GPS devices, it’s how you know what’s North when you’re driving down the high street. But pair the hardware compass to the idea of Augmented Reality (AR) and soon you open a door to a whole new world of possibilities. Literally.

Meet “Nearest Tube”. Not the catchiest name given for an app that’s true, but the first to be released that’ll introduce AR to the iPhone. At it’s core, the puts together the built in compass and the video capability of the iPhone to find you the nearest Tube Station. How does it do this? Well by super imposing the GPS co-ordinates of the nearest tube stations (according to your GPS fix) on top of the video produced by the camera.

dscf5226

By laying the iPhone “flat”, arrows will point to several of the nearest Tube stations to you.  Having the iPhone back to vertical, it’ll show you where those stations are. Check out the video which demonstrates the app in action and proves that seeing really is believing.

However, there are some issues with this. The app relies on the digital compass built into the iPhone which in turn relies on magnetism. This is where the problems start. It seems that if you’re close to anything that could even remotely interfere with the compass, it starts to go a little funny. So for example if you’re like me and bored on the bus home and want to mess with the compass, you’ll find yourself having to slowly peel away from the sides of the bus and waving your phone in figure of 8’s in the air just to get a magnetic fix, is not the coolest thing to look at. No word on when we’ll see this in the AppStore but it’s currently in that convoluted approval process so fingers crossed, not long to wait.

Apart from the magnetism issues, this looks to be a winner of an app. More importantly it’ll hopefully entice developers to spend the extra time and effort to develop more AR apps for the platform. We could then begin to see apps where you point your iPhone at a movie poster, it recognising it and then displaying the relevant information and play you the trailers. Or an app whereby plotting a route in Google Maps now gets super imposed onto the path in front of you showing precisely where to go. Who knows? If Apple does release more APIs for the video camera we might just see a whole new evolution in the way we use our mobile phones.

O2 wins Palm Pre and annihilates Smartphone Competition

Palm Pre launcher with Keyboard

O2 have just announced that they have won the rights to sell the Palm Pre on it’s network over here in the UK. For anybody who isn’t aware, the Palm Pre is in my opinion the closest thing to challenging the iPhone (3GS). Having had first hand experience using both, there really isn’t anything out there on the market who could challenge both these two devices (smartphone wise)

There’s no word yet on what the pricing will be for the Palm Pre but over in the US, it launched for $199.99 (roughly £129) on contract, but given that the iPhone 3GS sells at closer to £180, expect the Palm Pre to be more expensive than our neighbours across the pond.

Don’t hold your breath though, it’s not due for release until closer to Christmas time.

Now for the sake of neutrality, I’ve got to mention that I’m an iPhone 3GS user and that I’ve had all versions of the iPhone since it’s launch a few years back. Ever since I’ve first started using an iPhone, I haven’t looked back. Both family and friends have had a number of other smartphones notably the Blackberry Bold, Samsung Omnia and the Android G1 to name but a few but to be frank, none of them come close to being as good a device as the iPhone.

That said, the Palm Pre was the closest device to making me switch from Apple to Palm, with it’s WebOS interface and the inclusion of multitouch, it does have a great UI. What I find most annoying about these touch screen smartphone competitorsh is that they just don’t have as good a touch screen as the iPhone/Pre. For a device that is meant to be “touched”, for the most part it’s either too slow and laggy or just plain unresponsive when using the screen. Whether this is a patent issue or a cost issue with the hardware, I don’t know but after having something as fluid and instant as the iPhone, it really is difficult to adjust to the lag on most other smart phones.

Of course the iPhone isn’t without it’s criticisms. Many users aren’t used to the onscreen keyboard still and of course 3.2 megapixels is hardly anything revolutionary, in fact I’d go so far as to say that a lot of “new features” really struggle to break the mould, but it’s that first big leap that Apple took into the smartphone market at the start that’s had rival companies playing the catch up game.

I digress. Will the Palm Pre outsell the iPhone? Probably not if for the reason that it’s a substantially smaller company and in terms of advertising alone, cannot be matched to the Cupertino giant. Until the HTC Hero comes out, there really isn’t anything on the horizon as far as I know that’ll put pressure on Palm and Apple. But for O2 to have both of these devices available for purchase exclusively, you’ve got to take your hats off to the executives at O2 for making this bold and bright move.

Next Generation iPhone Details Virtually Confirmed [Updated Pre WWDC]

steve-jobs-iphone

Summer is nearly upon us and yes that can only mean one thing, a whole host of iPhone rumours will pick up pace from the inter-tubes. According to a plethora of trusted sources from around the net, a number of rumours have repeatedly emerged speculating on both the release dates and the model hardware from the Cupertino giant.

As most people will know, Apple will be hosting their annual WWDC from the 8-12 June and for those who really aren’t in the know, these conferences have been the centre stage for Steve Jobs and co. to launch products stashed deep away under development in Apple Labs.

Read on for the full details

So here are my predictions on this year’s most under-wraps fashion statement.

1st Gen iPhone 29th June 2007
iPhone 3G 11th July 2008
3rd Gen iPhone 17th July 2009
And as for the hardware specs and new features, it appears that most my sources who are highly reputable deem these figures as being accurate:

Software:
    • Video Recording + Video Editing Capabilities
    • MMS - Photo and Video
    • iPhone to allow direct TV and Movie downloads to the phone [streaming TV possibly?]
    • Partial Push notification
    • A2DP Stereo Bluetooth [to pair up your Bluetooth Stereo Headphones]

Hardware:

    • OLED Screen [thanks to LG]
    • Discontinuing the metal strip that goes around the side of the iPhone
    • Light up Apple logo on the back
    • Built in FM Transmitter
    • 3G will be upgraded to HSPA Fast Mobile Internet [either 3.5G or 3.75G but not 4G]
    • Double RAM and Processing power of iPhone 3G
    • Different Colours of the iPhone available
    • 1.5x Battery Life
    • Forward Facing camera mounted just above the screen [Video conferencing?]
    • Inbuilt Graphics Card
    • Matte Rubber Texture Body [possible scratch proof?]
    • 3.2 Megapixel Camera [with possible 5 mega-pixel version later this year]
    • Sleeker Design - Marginally Thinner?
    • True GPS - Turn by Turn driving directions
    • 4gb, 8gb, 16gb and a new 32gb Internal Memory version to be released
    • Built in Compass
    • A combination of Google Maps, the compass and GPS to identify locations through a photo

Marketing:

    • Possible names to be iPhone Video, iPhone 4G, iPhone Pro, iPhone Nano
    • Cut down Price with a Basic and a more expensive Advanced faster version
    • There will be 6 editions of the iPhone to be released

Those are my predictions about what’ll be announced at the WWDC. Note that everything highlighted in blue has already been confirmed (due to developers currently testing it out Firmware 3 Beta 5 and announcements by Apple earlier this year) and those in Red are looking the most unlikely. What I’m perhaps most excited about are both those new design features mentioned - perhaps bringing an end to dropped iPhones? Also the OLED screen would be an incredible edition to the iPhone that would bring close to HD quality screens to a mobile device. The one thing that nearly kept me from switching my portable Mp3 players (iRiver Clix 2nd Gen) was the fact that OLED makes displays look truly awesome. It’ll be interesting to see what effect this expensive new technology being implemented in such a quantity does to both the market price of the iPhone and to other consumer products that might implement it in the future.

2009_Palm_Pre_keyboardInterestingly enough, Apple’s potentially greatest competitor this year and one which holds the most promise of fulfilling the “iPhone-Killer” cliché will be that of the Palm Pre, due to be released 3 days prior to the WWDC. Whether this is a bold last ditch desperate attempt by Palm (and network Sprint in the US) at survival or a marketing master class remains to be seen. What’s sure is that there’s just under 3 weeks till show time.

UPDATE: I forgot to include an image that appears to be floating around the internet and has the key A330 model etched into the bottom (the next model number). Truth? or another fabrication from a Chinese Manufacturer? Certain seems to check all the boxes.

Update Update: Thanks Bill, and yes 32gb hard drive will definitely be in the next iPhone

Update Update Update: Here are a collection of some of the spy shots of the next Gen iPhone and what looks to be a very good guess by some designer.
